The essentials: what igaming affiliate marketing is, how it works, and how to get started.

What is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a type of performance marketing where a business pays an affiliate marketer when that affiliate achieves a certain result. This result is typically delivering a new lead or customer to the business, usually by directing online traffic to its website or to standalone offer pages.

Affiliate marketing is common across many industries – for example, price comparison sites for financial products and travel are affiliate websites.

The gambling industry relies heavily on affiliates. Affiliates typically use content or comparison websites to drive web users to online casinos and sports betting sites. If a website visitor then goes on to register and/or deposit funds, the casino or sports betting site makes a payment to the affiliate.

Casino and sports betting websites operate in a very competitive landscape, with many spending large sums of money on traditional media such as TV advertising and sports sponsorship to keep ahead of their rivals.

Compared with these forms of marketing, affiliate marketing is very cost-effective, so many gambling companies use a large number of affiliate marketers. Because they only pay affiliates when they are successful in sending them new players, there’s less risk of a poor return on their investment than with many other forms of marketing activity.
