Spanish igaming affiliate marketing costs up to €10.2m in Q1

Marketing costs associated with affiliates in the Spanish online gambling market increased 62.4% year-on-year to €10.2m (£5.0m/$6.3m) in the first quarter, while revenue in the country’s igaming sector also climbed 20.1%.

Gross gaming revenue for the three months to March 31, 2019 totalled €193.3m, up from €163.3m last year and also up 2.14% on €189.2m in the final quarter of 2018.

Betting generated €100.8m in Q1, up 26.2% on last year, while the online casino vertical saw revenue climb 20.2% to €67.1m.

However, online poker revenue slipped 1.4% to €21.2m, while bingo revenue fell 8.6% to €3.2m.

In addition to affiliation costs, operators spent €47.9m on advertising, €29.3m on promotions and €4.9m on sponsorship. In total, licensees committed €92.3m to marketing, up 21.4% on last year.

Higher spending helped boost player growth in Q1, with average monthly active accounts increasing 13.1% year-on-year to 900,513.
