Although the number of likely redundancies has not been confirmed – and the company has stressed that many of the employee positions under review will be retained, redeployed or relocated – the review will cover a number of the bookmaker’s departments in Leeds, London and Gibraltar.

The William Hill Affiliates website’s registered office is in Gibraltar.

William Hill is hoping to wrap up the MRG deal in early in the New Year.

William Hill is planning to use MRG’s established base in Malta as part of its new international hub on the island.

However, the company’s chief digital officer, Ulrik Bengtsson, announced as far back as June that William Hill would open a new office in Malta - four months before the MRG agreement was revealed.

When the proposed takeover of MRG was announced in October, CEO Philip Bowcock said: “MRG will provide William Hill with an international hub in Malta with market entry expertise and strong growth momentum in a number of European countries.

“William Hill will move from a single brand to a suite of brands that can maximise growth opportunities moving forward in new and existing markets.”
