Agimeg reports on Italian market growth

An Italian gaming affiliate has painted a positive picture of the country’s sports betting market, despite confirmation of strict new laws on gambling advertising this summer.

Agimeg said that combined retail and online sports betting revenue in Italy reached €111.4m last month – a 34.4% year-on-year increase and only slightly lower than the €114.3m recorded in July, when the Fifa World Cup concluded.

Italy’s national team failed to qualify for the tournament for the first time in 60 years.

In July, online betting generated just under €50m, a 27.8% year-on-year increase, with Bet365 accounting for 17.1% of the market share followed by SKS365 (14.9%) and Snaitech (10.5%). Online betting revenue has increased by 41.5% so far this year.

In August, online casino sales rocketed 26% year-on-year to €56.5m, with PokerStars leading the way with a 9.7% market share followed by Lottomatica (8.9%) and Sisal (8.4%). So far this year, online casino revenue has improved by nearly a quarter.

However, online poker’s cash games revenue dipped by 6.9% to €4.8m and tournament fees decreased by 5.9% to €5.6m.

Agimeg will be one of the companies affected significantly by the Italian government’s clampdown on gambling promotions and advertising, with the full regulations set to be introduced on New Year’s Day 2019.
